Consultations

Local Long-Term Care Ombudsman are often called upon to offer information on a variety of topics related to aging including dementia, facility placement, family support, care planning etc. These are opportunities to shape the culture to care and information available to the community unrelated to complaint investigations. Ombudsman consultations are often provided to facility staff as well as families, residents and community members.

In 2017 California Long-Term Care Ombudsman provided over 14,100 consultations to facility staff. The top three topics were:

  1. Care Issues
  2. Admission Policies and Practices
  3. Long-Term Care Structure/Environment

In 2017 California Long-Term Care Ombudsman provided over 63,000 consultations to individuals. The top three topics were:

  1. Care Issues
  2. Ombudsman Services/Roles/Responsibilities
  3. Advanced Health Care Directive/Powers of Attorney

Facility Education

Many local Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs provide formalized education to staff members in facilities as well as community partners. The local Ombudsman works in cooperation with licensing and facilities to identify topics of interest and facilitates them for front-line staff members free of charge.

In addition to on-site education many programs facilitate extended learning opportunities on critical topics such as mental health, reducing anti-psychotics and person centered care. In 2017 local Ombudsman Programs participated in over 600 community education events.

In 2017 California Long-Term Care Ombudsman provided 413 instances education to facilities. The top three topics were:

  2. Residents Rights
  3. Ombudsman Services/Roles/Responsibilities
